Autoclaves are high pressure chambers that utilize heat and steam for sterilization, and thus pose significant risks to personnel if not operated and maintained correctly. Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is also critical to preventing accidents. Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) has developed a web page to assist you in the safe and appropriate use of autoclaves. EHS has also developed this sample SOP detailing safe operating procedures regarding autoclaves.

EHS strongly urges all PIs and Lab Safety Supervisors to review their autoclave procedures and to implement the autoclave SOP. If there are any questions, please contact Erika England (ee42@email.unc.edu or 919-962-5712).

Thanks in advance to your commitment to safety!

Kind regards,
